San Bernardino County’s favorite Sulcata tortoise, Pumpkin, welcomed thousands of residents to four special Halloween-themed rooftop garden events at his home among many other animals at the Sam J. Racadio Highland Branch Library and Environmental Learning Center from Oct. 26 through Oct. 30, 2024. Many community members may have been surprised to learn that the Highland branch not only provides hundreds of thousands of amazing books, eResources and programs for all ages, but also showcases dozens of birds, reptiles, amphibians and other friendly critters.

This event yielded thousands of people from all over San Bernardino County to experience a Halloween-themed, self-guided rooftop garden walk featuring beloved characters such as Snoopy, Jack Skellington, Bluey and more. Families enjoyed a myriad of activities from face painting, crafts and trick-or-treating.

“It’s exciting to provide a unique space for our residents to not only celebrate literacy, but to also learn about the environment and native plants on our rooftop garden, while attending a family-friendly event that is themed to a popular, beloved holiday such as Halloween,” said County Librarian Melanie Orosco.

The library system celebrated over 700 attendees and over 8,000 items circulated throughout the events. For more information regarding other upcoming events at the Highland branch and all other locations, patrons can visit https://www.sbclib.org or call (909) 387-2220.
