Recently released figures by the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) show that San Bernardino County Veterans Affairs received $1,029,000 in funding from the CalVet County Subvention program for fiscal year 2023-24. The payment was the largest in the state, outpacing the next closest county by nearly $140,000.

The program awards county veteran service offices with an annual pro-rata share of $11 million that is primarily based on workload units performed by each county. Workload units are earned when claims for veteran benefits are filed on behalf of veterans or their dependents.

Additionally, with the enactment of the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2024 on Nov. 25, veterans receiving disability compensation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs can expect a 2.5 percent increase in those payments. The cost-of-living increase also impacts dependents receiving indemnity compensation payments and became effective Dec. 1, 2024. The updated payment rates may be viewed on the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs website.
