Benjamin Mena of San Bernardino was working seasonal jobs in the construction industry. Still, the instability posed tremendous challenges for him and his family, and he was desperately in need of a fresh start.
That turning point came when a friend mentioned the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board’s (WDB) resources, and Mena fully tapped into the available services. Through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)-funded “Prison to Employment” initiative at the America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) in San Bernardino, he was connected with life-changing support that helped him forge a new path.
“I can’t give Larry Aragon [workforce development specialist] enough credit. He went above and beyond—whether it was encouraging talks or helping me stay focused when things got tough,” Mena says.
That support proved crucial. Mena enrolled in a full-time, four-week training course to receive his trucking certification. Despite initial challenges passing the driving test, he stayed the course, bolstered by the steady encouragement of Larry and the AJCC staff.
“I didn’t just change my career—this changed my life and my family’s life,” he says.
With the help and support of his new employer, Elite Pallets Solutions, Mena earned his commercial license. Today, he’s working full-time, bringing a level of consistency and financial stability he never experienced before.
Looking ahead, Mena is exploring the possibility of continuing his training and education. “I’m always trying to learn what’s next,” he says. “This program gave me hope, and people like Larry made the difference.” Programs like these are funded by the WIOA, providing individuals with the skills, tools and opportunities needed to thrive.
“Benjamin’s journey is a powerful example of what’s possible when people have access to the right support and resources,” said WDB Chairman William Sterling. “Our partnerships and dedicated staff empower residents to rebuild their lives and contribute to the economic vitality of our region.”
