The San Bernardino County Public Works Department celebrated a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of the Glen Helen Parkway Bridge and Road Improvement Project on Tuesday, July 1. This $52.2 million initiative aims to enhance the safety, reliability and accessibility of the roadway, serving as a vital connector for residents, commuters and visitors to Glen Helen Regional Park and the greater Devore area.

The project, which has been years in the making, involves the construction of a new bridge, improved storm drainage, and better access across the corridor. The bridge will span the Cajon Wash just west of the Union Pacific and BNSF railroad tracks, and will include features such as wider shoulders, designated bike lanes, sidewalks and upgraded lighting. The project also incorporates multi-use pathways that are horse-friendly, supporting both recreation and regional mobility.

Noel Castillo, director of San Bernardino County Public Works, emphasized the strategic planning and collaborative efforts that made this project possible. “Behind the scenes, our dedicated county staff have been working tirelessly coordinating to leverage outside funding, including support from the Federal Highway Bridge Program and Measure I through SBCTA, rather than relying solely on local dollars. This approach allowed us to stretch our county’s resources, reserving funds that can now go toward other essential services for our residents.”

The Glen Helen Parkway Bridge and Road Improvement Project represents a significant investment in the future of San Bernardino County, promising safer and more efficient transportation for all. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2027, and the community eagerly anticipates the positive changes it will bring.
