The San Bernardino County Probation Department is proud to announce that the Probation Account Auditing Tracking System (PAATS) has been honored with a prestigious National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Award for 2025. This recognition highlights not only the innovation behind PAATS, but also how Probation continues to fulfill its mission of protecting the community and serving the residents of San Bernardino County through collaboration and forward-thinking solutions.
In the world of law enforcement, maintaining secure system access is central to public safety. Each employee requires accounts that safeguard sensitive and confidential data, and those accounts must be carefully tracked, monitored and deactivated when employees leave the department. Previously, this was a slow, paper-based process that placed heavy demands on staff and created unnecessary risks.
With this challenge in mind, the Probation Automated Systems team partnered with the county’s Innovation & Technology Department (ITD) to develop PAATS, a modernized system designed to streamline account management, strengthen oversight and ensure accountability. This teamwork-driven approach allowed the project to be completed under budget, saving taxpayer dollars, while building a solution that sets a new standard for operational security.
With PAATS in place, audits are now faster, more accurate and easier to complete, ensuring that employee access is properly managed at all times. This strengthens data protection and increases the department’s ability to respond swiftly to changes in staffing. These improvements directly support the Probation department’s mission to protect the community by securing the systems that underpin operations. Receiving a NACo Achievement Award affirms that the San Bernardino County Probation Department is not only meeting local needs, but also leading by example at the national level.
