To raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program hosted a Community Baby Shower and Health Fair on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Dorothy Inghram Learning Center in San Bernardino.
San Bernardino County Public Health programs, healthcare experts and local organizations provided resources to 140 attendees and their families. This annual event, now in its third year, featured an expert panel discussion and free breastfeeding supplies. Families in attendance took part in breastfeeding and health education trivia, and each family left with a gift for participation. Families received breastfeeding support items, diapers, books and other baby essentials.
The Black Infant Health, Nutrition and Wellness, SmileSBC, Traffic S.A.F.E., California Home Visiting Program, Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and the Department of Behavioral Health hosted resource tables and provided attendees with information and support tailored to their breastfeeding and parenting needs.
In addition, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, Inland Empire Health Plan and Loma Linda University Health Smoke Free Program had information tables and engaged with families.
We were honored to be joined by the San Bernardino City Mayor Helen Tran who stated, “It was a joy to join families at the San Bernardino County WIC Community Baby Shower. As a mother, I know how valuable these resources are in giving children the best start in life. Events like this show the power of community in supporting parents and building a stronger future for our city.”
The Community Baby Shower and Health Fair reflects Public Health’s commitment to maternal and child wellness and provided a supportive space for families to learn more about breastfeeding while celebrating National Breastfeeding Month with us.
