First 5 San Bernardino partnered with the Chino Youth Museum to throw a very special birthday party for Potter the Otter, the children’s book character and First 5 mascot. The Sept. 30 celebration was held to bring attention to the importance of early literacy and encouraged families to “Gift a Kid a Book” for birthdays, holidays and other milestones.
The media event also marked the Chino Youth Museum’s 25th anniversary, celebrating its role as a hub for family learning and interactive play. More than 30 preschool-aged children and their families enjoyed free books, cake, crafts, sing-alongs and hands-on exploration of the museum’s exhibits.
“Reading builds stronger brains, gets kids ready for school and strengthens family connections,” said Scott McGrath, deputy director of systems and impact at First 5 San Bernardino. “We really enjoy partnering with the city of Chino and the great team at the Chino Youth Museum. Seeing the excitement children had unwrapping their own books was priceless.”
Since launching in 2022, the Gift a Kid a Book campaign has provided more than 10,000 books to families across San Bernardino County. Chino Mayor Eunice Ulloa praised the partnership, noting that for 25 years the museum has been a beloved place to inspire curiosity and celebrate birthdays. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to make books their go-to gifts for life’s celebrations.
