San Bernardino County Human Resources was recently recognized at the state level for its innovative Rapid Hire Program, earning a prestigious Challenge Award from the California State Association of Counties (CSAC) during a ceremony in Sacramento. Out of more than 400 programย submissions fromย counties across California, only 15 Challenge Awards were selected, underscoring the significance of this achievement. The honor recognizes programs that demonstrate creativity, measurable impact and enhanced service to the public.

Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to address critical staffing shortages, Rapid Hire transformed a hiring process that once took months into a streamlined, single-day event. Candidates can interview, receive same-day conditional job offers, complete live-scan fingerprinting, schedule pre-employment physicals and finalize onboarding paperwork all in one location. This coordinated effort between Human Resources and county departments eliminates delays and improves the candidate experience.

Over the past five years, the Rapid Hire Program has delivered measurable results. It has significantly reduced hiring timelines, strengthened departmentsโ€™ ability to connect talented professionals with meaningful public service careers and improved overall recruitment efficiency. In 2024 alone, the county hosted 35 Rapid Hire events, conducted 1,287 interviews and extended 691 job offers, filling 94 percent of targeted vacancies. Since implementation, applications have increased by 78 percent, and the countyโ€™s vacancy rate has declined from more than 20 percent to 15.78 percent, continuing to shape and strengthen the countyโ€™s recruitment strategies.

This statewide recognition reflects the dedication, innovation and collaborative spirit of the Human Resources and recruitment team. By challenging traditional processes and embracing continuous improvement, San Bernardino County is ensuring that opportunity remains accessible while the community is served by a talented and responsive workforce committed to enhancing the quality of life for residents throughout the county.
