San Bernardino County Public Works is proud to announce that the Santa Ana River Trail Phase III project has received two major honors from the American Public Works Association — the 2025 Inland Empire Branch Project of the Year Award and the Southern California Chapter B.E.S.T. (Building Excellence Shaping Tomorrow) Award.

The awards recognize public projects that make a meaningful difference in their communities. This year’s competition was especially strong, with more than 75 agencies submitting projects and nearly 200 entries reviewed by public works leaders across the region. Being selected highlights the positive impact this project has made for residents throughout the area.

Completed in October 2025, the project added 3.5 miles of new bike and walking trail along the Santa Ana River, connecting Redlands and San Bernardino. The new section extends the existing Santa Ana River Trail and gives cyclists, walkers, runners and families a safe and scenic route away from busy roadways.

The trail also includes a new bridge over the Mission Zanja River and several undercrossings beneath major streets, allowing people to travel along the entire route without crossing vehicular traffic. With multiple access points, the trail makes it easier for nearby neighborhoods to enjoy outdoor recreation, exercise and a safe way to travel through the region.

The Santa Ana River Trail Phase III project was made possible through strong collaboration across the county and regional partners. San Bernardino County Public Works designed and built the trail, while Regional Parks funded the project and now maintains it. Additional coordination with regional agencies and the cities of Redlands and San Bernardino helped bring the project to life.

The Santa Ana River Trail continues to connect communities, encourage healthy outdoor activity, and provide residents with a safe and beautiful place to walk, bike and enjoy the outdoors in San Bernardino County.
