Mark your calendar: Cosmic Nights 2025 returns to the Museums
Looking for a starry-eyed start to your new year? Head over to the San Bernardino County Museum on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 10 p.m. for Cosmic Nights. In partnership with the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers, the museum invites the public to view stars, planets, the moon and other astronomical phenomena.
The evening features telescope viewing and an opportunity to discuss astronomy with telescope experts. Local refreshment vendors will be on-site including dirty soda and lemonade from So-Cal Pop.
Visitors are welcome to set up portable lawn chairs and blankets for extended viewing and are also encouraged to bring binoculars or set up their own telescopes. The event takes place outdoors and visitors are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Kite Day with Supervisor Baca, Jr.
Join San Bernardino County Regional Parks, the Bloomington Recreation and Park District, Board of Supervisors Vice Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., the Olive Branch Development and Empowerment Services, Inc., and Bloomington Little League for a Kite Day at Kessler Park on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free to the public, and all ages are welcome to this family-friendly event.
Spend the afternoon flying a kite or learning how to fly a kite. All supplies will be provided. Participants can either make their own kite, pick out an assembled kite or bring their own kite. Other activities include arts & crafts, games, giveaways, music and vendors.

Boost your chances of securing contracts with San Bernardino County
In collaboration with San Bernardino County, the San Bernardino County Equity Element Group has created a workshop series designed to increase the number of minority-owned businesses that access county contracts this year.
The goal of the event, “Empowering Minority-Owned Businesses: Your 101 Guide to Contract Bidding Success,” is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to boost their chances of winning county contracts.
“The Equity Element Group is committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive San Bernardino County. These workshops are designed to help people of color access and increase the number and size of contracts obtained through the procurement process,” said Rev. George Lamb, chair of the Equity Element Group.
The objectives of the workshops are:
- Understanding and managing the county’s procurement system, ePro: Attendees will learn how to register, manage their vendor accounts, reset credentials, and navigate the ePro system to search for open bids.
- Review bid proposals and ask questions: The workshops will cover county bid request templates, completion of the Local Vendor Self-Certification form, and strategies for effectively posting questions to clarify bid requirements.
- Respond to bids successfully: Participants will master creating and submitting precise quotes in ePro, while avoiding common pitfalls.
- Businesses can register online with ePro at the Purchasing Department website at: wp.sbcounty.gov/purchasing/vendor-registration.

Janice Horst Lucerne Valley Library Inaugural Stargazing: Lunar Event
On Feb. 12, 2025, the Janice Horst Lucerne Valley Library will host its Inaugural Stargazing: Lunar Event from 5 to 7 p.m. to highlight the capabilities of the recently installed Observatory and to connect the community to the science of astrophotography.
The event will also feature our community partners from the County Museum, Regional Parks and the San Bernardino Valley College Stem Department. The County Library will also have smaller telescope stations for viewing the night sky including the February full moon known as the “Snow Moon,” STEAM activities, opportunity drawings, and a presentation on the capabilities of the Observatory, which will include a showing of the recent photos taken by the County Library staff using the Observatory telescopes.

This Valentine’s Day, couples seeking to celebrate their love with a lifelong commitment are invited to make an appointment for marriage services at the San Bernardino County Clerk’s Office. Whether planning an intimate ceremony or looking forward to your special day, the County Clerk’s Office is here to help make the experience seamless and memorable.
“We are thrilled to offer couples the opportunity to marry on one of the most romantic days of the year,” said Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Josie Gonzales. “Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate love, and we are proud to assist couples in starting their journey together in San Bernardino County.”
Appointments for marriage licenses and ceremony services are now available, and couples are encouraged to reserve their spot early. Calico California Days family event returns to celebrate Old West history
San Bernardino County Regional Parks is excited to commemorate the fourth annual California Days event at Calico Ghost Town over Presidents’ Day weekend on Feb. 15-16, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event celebrates early California history with a focus on California’s admission to the union as the nation’s 31st state on Sept. 9, 1850, and celebrated on Feb. 22 every year.
This family-friendly event celebrates the people and culture of early California by hosting family activities, gunfighter shows by the Calico Mountain Volunteer Gunfighters, butter churning, and reenactments, along with educational displays on the state’s Bear Flag, Pony Express Trail and Butterfield Overland Trail.
Serving as a natural backdrop to the Old West, Calico will travel back in time with a beard and mustache contest, arts & crafts, pony rides, games and contests for all ages, stories from the Pony Express, and a Pony Express relay for kids under 11.
There will be live music and entertainment with the Victorian Muse Theater at the Town Hall, classroom reenactment sessions from the 1800s at the schoolhouse and some Wild West street skits performed by the “Scoundrels Alley” Calico troupe.
The popular Dorsey Dog Delivery Game also returns and is a doggie scavenger hunt where owners and their furry friends search for clues throughout town to win the ultimate prize of a treat goodie bag and first-place ribbon from Dorsey’s Dog House.
Eventgoers can enjoy our fair-style food lineup for very hungry appetites, the Calico Restaurant and Lil’s Saloon will be open. All the Calico attractions will be open, including Maggie Mine and the Calico Oddessa Railroad. Attractions are an additional charge. For attraction prices, visit www.calicoattractions.com.

Victor Valley Museum celebrates Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Victor Valley Museum (VVM) is proud to announce two special programs designed to celebrate, educate and inspire the High Desert community. This month, the museum will offer two engaging public programs that share the contributions and triumphs that have helped shape the African American experience.
1. African Textile Stamping Workshop
Date: Saturday, Feb. 15
Time: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Join us to learn about the symbology of Sankofa, an expression of Twi language from Ghana. These workshops are hosted by Theresa Polley-Shellcroft and T. Faye Griffin and inspired by Deborah McDuff William’s exhibit, Stolen Identities: River Routes to Freedom. Both sessions, one offered from 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. and the second one from 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m., will cover fabric and paper stamping. Materials and aprons will be provided.
2. Artist Talk with Deborah McDuff Williams
Date: Saturday, Feb. 22
Time: Noon to 2 p.m.
Meet the artist and creator of the exhibit, Stolen Identities: River Routes to Freedom. Our guest artist Deborah McDuff Williams will discuss the inspiration behind her visual journalism of African heritage art pieces and share the unique meaningful, and unifying themes of her work. McDuff Williams uses wood, fabrics, textiles and cloth decorations on her works to symbolize the marriage between African and American tradition.
Not able to visit the museum for these workshops? Stop by during regular business hours instead and see some of the fascinating exhibitions currently on display, including Stolen Identities: River Routes to Freedom, an exhibit of 3-dimensional, mixed media figures which tell the story of how some enslaved Africans in the American south were able to escape to freedom.
San Bernardino County Museum’s (SBCM) digital channel, SBCM Connect, offers an insight into the history of Murray’s Dude Ranch and its importance as the first Black-owned dude ranch, hosting A-List celebrities while also serving as one of the only integrated vacation destinations in the nation.

Join Regional Parks at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park for a Movie in the Park, featuring Gnomeo & Juliet by Disney. Movie begins at 5:30 p.m. All ages are welcome. Bring your blankets, chairs, snacks and the whole family for this incredible opportunity to enjoy beautiful Guasti park after hours. Free popcorn will be provided while supplies last.
Admission is $10 per vehicle and leashed pets are welcome. Guasti offers fishing (seasonally stocked every Thursday with trout), large areas for playing, running and bicycling, picnic areas with grills and a playground.

County Library partners with Raising Cane’s for Winter Reading Program
The San Bernardino County Library is pleased to kick off its second annual partnership with Raising Cane’s restaurant to promote reading among children between the ages of 0-17 this winter. The “Raising Readers with Raising Cane’s” program is currently running from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, 2025, at all San Bernardino County branch locations.
“We are thrilled to partner with Raising Cane’s to promote literacy and a love for reading among our youngest residents,” said Board of Supervisors Chair and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “In order to achieve our Countywide Vision, we need to ensure our children are meeting their grade level requirements, particularly with reading.”
San Bernardino County residents are invited to participate in the program by signing up through Beanstack at sbclib.beanstack.org. To earn an achievement award, participants must check out five books with their library card, read those five books, and track their reading through Beanstack. A voucher for a free kids meal will be issued at any of the 32 San Bernardino County library locations. Participants may earn up to three vouchers for the duration of the program.
Participants do not need to have their own library card in order to participate but are encouraged to sign up at https://sbclib.org/library-card-information/ for one. Receipts must be presented at the service desk during the library’s operating hours, including renewed items. Raising Cane’s will honor the vouchers at any Southern California location. All vouchers are available while supplies last.
In support of the Vision2Read literacy campaign as well as San Bernardino County’s Opportunity Campaign, this program aims to improve literacy rates among children between the ages of 0 to 17 by inspiring an excitement to read, providing achievement goals, and encouraging a reading routine.

Regional Parks second trout derby heads to Mojave Narrows
Regional Parks is excited to welcome back the one-day trout derby with our second event scheduled on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mojave Narrows Regional Park. Gates open at 6:30 a.m. and pre-paid derby fees are encouraged. Derby fees are $20 per person and $10 per vehicle. A fishing license is required for all participants ages 16 years and older.
Participants will receive a wristband and packet with derby entry forms and rules.
Regional Parks will have a weigh-in station available and encourages participants to allow plenty of time to weigh and enter their fish prior to the 1 p.m. cutoff time.
Derby cash prizes will be awarded for:
- First place: $1,000
- Second place: $500
- Third place: $250
Winners do not need to be present to claim their prize(s). Winners will be announced at approximately 1:15 p.m. at the Regional Parks weigh-in station area.

Mojave Narrows Regional Park is located at 18000 Yates Rd. in Victorville. Park hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and is closed on Christmas Day.
Trout is stocked weekly on Thursdays with 747 pounds of trout. For the derby, 1,315 lbs. of trout, including lightning trout, will be stocked on Friday, March 7. The lakes will be closed to public fishing on Friday, March 7 and will reopen to the public after the derby ends.
