San Bernardino County reminds us that emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere and with no notice.

September is National Preparedness Month and the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services is here to remind you that preparedness has many layers.  We will continue to share simple, practical steps you can take to strengthen your readiness – whether for yourself, your family or your community.

Earlier this month, we focused on self preparedness – building your personal emergency kit and making sure you have the essentials.

This week, we turn to family preparedness.

Emergencies can be stressful, but having a family plan ahead of time that everyone understands and practices helps protect the ones you love. A strong plan not only provides reassurance but also strengthens your family’s confidence in knowing what to do when it matters most.

We invite you to join Emergency Services in making preparedness a family achievement! For more information, visit Preparedness Starts Here and follow our social media @readysbcounty.

Family preparedness plan tips

  • Choose meeting places: Identify two safe spots – one right outside your home (like the front yard or mailbox) and another outside your neighborhood (such as a park or community center). These safe spots make it easier to reunite quickly.
  • Don’t forget pets: Don’t forget your furry friends. Prepare carriers, leashes, extra food and water, and know which shelters are pet friendly.
  • Share emergency contacts: Make sure every family member knows who to call. Choose one local contact and one out-of-town contact in case local phone lines are overwhelmed.

Creating a plan together turns preparedness into a family activity. Talking through “what ifs” can be reassuring, especially for children, and ensures everyone knows their role. By planning as a team, your family is better prepared for whatever comes your way.
