Explore silver mining town rich in history during Calico Days annual event

Graphic for Calico Days at Calico Ghost Town, featuring three people in vintage Western attire, posing cheerfully. Event details are September 27-28, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Calico Days will be held from Sept. 27-28 at Calico Ghost Town.

Do you ever wonder how Calico miners lived and worked? Join San Bernardino County Regional Parks and Calico Ghost Town for its 59th Annual Calico Days event held over the weekend of Sept. 27-28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Calico Ghost Town that recreates the life and times of miners during the late 1800s.

The event focuses on the spirit of the Old West and features an 1880s costume contest, reenactment skits, pie-eating contest, Miner’s Triathlon competition, Burro Run competition, Bucket Brigade contest, live musical performances, egg toss competition, gunfights and more.

The Miner’s Triathlon and Bucket Brigade will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27 and the Burro Run will be held on Sunday, Sept. 28.

The triathlon for men and women competitions include rock pulling, muckraking and tug-of-war events. The burro race is a competition featuring contestants guiding their burro from station to station across town to be the first to reach the finish line. The Bucket Brigade is a race to see whose team can scoop and pass buckets of water to fill up the water barrel first.

Food options during the event include the Calico House Restaurant, Lil’s Saloon, and food vendors. Attendees can also visit Calico shops and attractions including Maggie Mine, Mystery Shack, Dorsey’s Gourmet Dog House shop and the Odessa Railroad train ride. Calico is pet-friendly and leashed pets are welcome.

A female contestant and her mini-burro find a marker and claims her stake at a recent Calico Days Burro Race at Calico Ghost Town.

This family-friendly event celebrates the life and culture of the 1880s, when Calico was a bustling silver mining town. The town thrived from 1881 until the late 1890s, when it began to see a steady decline in population as silver lost its value and residents started to leave.

At the height of its glory, the town’s population rose to about 1,200 people in 1887, and had about 22 saloons, a schoolhouse, post office, its own version of a China Town, a cemetery and its own newspaper. The town produced about $86 million in silver and about $45 million in borax, hauling its product by the infamous 21-Mule Team.

In 1966, Walter Knott, the founder of Knott’s Berry Farm, donated Calico to San Bernardino County, which is now managed by the Regional Parks Department.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids ages 4-11, and free for kids under age 3. Calico Ghost Town is located at 36600 Ghost Town Rd. in Yermo.

Get ready for a spooktacular reading adventure! San Bernardino County Library’s Boo! Book Festival is brewing with new books and adorable Squishmallows from Oct. 25 – 31. Come find your next favorite read and maybe even snag a new cuddly friend!

This Halloween season, the San Bernardino County Library system is treating readers to more than just spooky stories. From Oct. 25 through Oct. 31, library card holders who check out 30 items during the BOO! Book Festival will receive a special prize: a Squishmallow of their choice—just in time for the fall festivities.

The weeklong celebration invites patrons of all ages to visit their local County Library branch, stock up on great reads, and take home one of the most popular plush toys around with five options to choose from. Each library will be fully stocked with hundreds of new books released just for the occasion, ranging from chilling thrillers and autumn-themed picture books to young adult adventures and bestselling fiction.

“This is one of our most anticipated events of the year,” said Program Coordinator Elizabeth Williams. “The BOO! Book Festival not only celebrates the joy of reading, but rewards our loyal library users with something extra special. Whether you love ghost stories, fantasy, or nonfiction, this is the perfect time to check out what’s new on our shelves.”

To earn a Squishmallow, patrons simply need to check out 30 items during the festival week using their valid library card. With thousands of books, DVDs, audiobooks and other materials available, building a stack is easier than ever—and perfect for cozy autumn reading.

Quantities of Squishmallows are limited and available while supplies last, so early participation is encouraged.

The BOO! Book Festival is part of the County Library’s ongoing effort to encourage literacy, promote library use, and create fun, engaging opportunities for the community to connect with books—and each other.
