Living along the San Andreas Fault means earthquakes aren’t a matter of if, but when. The 2025 Great ShakeOut is approaching, and the Office of Emergency Services (OES) is encouraging all residents to participate in this important earthquake preparedness drill.
Date: Thursday, October 16, 2025
Time: 10:16 AM (local time)
The Great ShakeOut is an annual event that provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and communities to practice how to stay safe during an earthquake. The key actions are simple but lifesaving:
- Drop or Lock to the ground or find a secure position
- Cover your head and neck under a sturdy surface
- Hold On until the shaking stops
Participation each year reinforces the importance of emergency preparedness and helps ensure everyone knows how to respond effectively during an earthquake. Earthquakes can occur without warning, so practicing safety steps in advance builds confidence and can save lives.
Take time to review evacuation routes and emergency protocols at work and set aside some time to prepare at home. Here are a few simple steps you can take to prepare at home:
- ️Secure heavy furniture and appliances to prevent tipping.
- Identify safe spots in your home or workplace.
- Prepare an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, and first aid.
- Make a family or workplace communication plan.
- Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” regularly.
Show Us How You ShakeOut!
Take photos during your ShakeOut drill and share them on social media using the hashtag #SBCShakeOut, tagging @ReadySBCounty and @SBCounty. It’s a great way to show your commitment to preparedness and inspire others to get ready too!
The fault line may try to pull us apart, but our preparedness keeps us connected and safe. Are you ready to hold us together?
