Steamed rice with vegetables, served alongside a savory pumpkin purée and layered over turkey-flavored canned food, was happily devoured by humbled purrs and chomps at the Devore and Big Bear Animal Shelters on Wednesday, Nov. 26. San Bernardino County Animal Care hosted its first annual “Pawsgiving” celebration — a special event that brings Thanksgiving meals and a comforting holiday experience to pets awaiting adoption.
Animal Care staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare and deliver bowls of food to every animal in the shelter. Thanks to generous donations from the Animals aRe First Fund (ARFF) and caring community members, the heartwarming celebration came to life. Spreading holiday cheer through flavorful, festive meals, one thing became clear: our staff members were grateful for the chance to provide warm, delicious meals to shelter animals still waiting for their forever homes.
“We’re incredibly grateful for ARFF and for the community members whose donations and kindness make events like this possible,” said Jennifer Osorio, assistant director of public health. “These meals are more than just food — they’re a reminder that every animal here matters.”
In an assembly-line rhythm, staff members layered each tray with food and treats before delivering them one by one. Curious shelter dogs and cats peeked out from their kennels, patiently watching as their holiday meals arrived.
“Our staff and volunteers turned all those donations into real Thanksgiving plates for the animals, bringing a little extra warmth to their day,” said Curtis Johnson, supervising animal control officer.
In addition to celebrating Pawsgiving, Animal Care is encouraging residents to help make an even bigger impact by adopting or fostering a pet. For more information on adoption, fostering, volunteering or supporting San Bernardino County Animal Care, visit animalcare.sbcounty.gov.
