County snowplow clears a snow-covered mountain road at night during an active winter storm.
San Bernardino County Public Works crews plow mountain roads overnight during the season’s first major snowfall.

The first major winter storm of the season blanketed San Bernardino County mountain communities with up to 3 feet of snow this week and more snowfall is expected through tomorrow. County crews are currently working to keep roads safe and passable. San Bernardino County Public Works is responsible for plowing more than 516 miles of county-maintained and special district roads each winter season.

With increased snow comes increased mountain travel. Officials are reminding residents and visitors that preparation is key before heading uphill. Motorists are encouraged to:

Chain controls may be implemented quickly as weather conditions change. Drivers must install chains when required and pull completely off the roadway before doing so. Under chain control, speed limits are typically 25 to 30 mph, and failure to comply may result in a California Highway Patrol citation.

Motorists are encouraged to prepare before traveling. Drivers should carry properly fitted chains, keep fuel tanks full, drive cautiously and pack emergency supplies, including blankets, water and extra warm clothing.

Visitors enjoying snow play are reminded not to park in roadways or street right-of-way areas. Please recreate in safe locations away from traffic and remember to pack out all trash.

“Snow in San Bernardino County is beautiful and fun,” said San Bernardino County Public Works Director Noel Castillo. “But safety comes first and depends on preparation, patience and responsibility from everyone.”
