San Bernardino County put earthquake preparedness into action this morning, joining communities across the state for the 2026 Great California ShakeOut.

At 10:15 a.m., more than 30 county departments, cities, schools and partner agencies practiced “drop, cover and hold on.” Participants also conducted drills and evacuations designed to test emergency procedures and strengthen readiness across San Bernardino County.

With several active faults throughout the region, including the San Andreas Fault, exercises like the Great California ShakeOut help reinforce the importance of knowing what to do when an earthquake strikes.

Today’s Great California ShakeOut was a chance to practice, but earthquake preparedness is important year-round.

Residents can keep the momentum going by reviewing their household emergency plan, checking emergency supplies, securing heavy furniture and other objects that could fall, and identifying safe places to drop, cover and hold on.

And the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services will continue the conversation at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands during the annual Shake or Treat event this Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Families can connect with Emergency Services staff, learn about earthquake safety and explore resources to help prepare their households for emergencies.

The app provides emergency alerts, interactive hazard maps, evacuation zones, safety check-ins and trusted local resources.

Residents can also sign up for TENS, San Bernardino County’s emergency notification system, to receive important alerts during an emergency.
