Prepi dayPi (Greek letter “π”) is a number that represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is recognized as March 14 (3.14) around the world—coincidentally, the same date as Albert Einstein’s birthday! You can get ready for Pi Day at the San Bernardino County Museum on Sunday, March 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. with special activities related to mathematics.

Pi is an irrational number. It continues infinitely without repeating itself or forming a pattern. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. At the museum, we’ve posted the first 40 digits on the wall of the Schuiling Gallery. Visitors are invited to bring along a sample of their favorite numeral to post on the wall near Pi.

Family activities on the museum’s Pre-Pi afternoon will center on crafts using numbers, circles, geometry, and math concepts. Have you ever seen an object with just one edge and just one surface? You will learn to make your own and amaze your friends! Test out Pi – does it always work for measuring a circle? Use the Pi wheel and see. In addition to a variety of crafts, the Museum will also serve free slices of pie at 3:14 p.m. as supplies last. Pie, unlike Pi, isn’t infinite!

Pre-Pi Day and the County Museum’s other exciting events and exhibits reflect the effort by the Board of Supervisors to achieve the Countywide Vision by celebrating arts, culture, and education in the county, creating quality of life for residents and visitors.
