In an effort to protect the public from further spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, the County’s Acting Health Officer today ordered the cancellation of gatherings of any number of people within the county starting tomorrow through at least April 6.
The order also requires, starting tomorrow, the closing of all movie theatres, gyms, health clubs, bars, adult entertainment establishments, and other businesses that serve alcohol but do not serve food. Food and beverage establishments must follow guidance issued by the California Department of Public Health on Monday (www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/OPA/Pages/NR20-024.aspx).
The order does not apply to activities “essential to the functioning of our state” including work, public transportation, airport travel, grocery stores, charitable food distribution, certified farmers’ markets, and shopping at stores or malls. The order also does not apply to congregate living situations, including dormitories and homeless encampments. All San Bernardino County public schools have voluntarily closed as part of the effort to stop the spread of the virus, according to the County Superintendent of Schools.
“I understand this creates hardships for many families and businesses. But at the end of the day I believe we all understand that we are in this together, and that together, we will get through this,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Curt Hagman, who announced the order today in a video, which can be seen here. “The county is taking every step we can to stay in front of this threat.”
“The health risk from COVID-19 to the general public in San Bernardino County remains low at this time, but everyone is strongly urged to engage in practices that reduce the risk of spread,” said Acting County Health Officer Dr. Erin Gustafson.
The order also strongly cautions that persons aged 65 years and older and person of any age with certain underlying health conditions are at increased risk should they contract COVID-19, and encourages them to self-quarantine.
The order came amid confirmation today of the third reported case of novel coronavirus infection within San Bernardino County, a woman in her 50s. The county has no fatalities attributable to novel coronavirus.
On March 10, the County Public Health Officer and the Board of Supervisors declared a local health emergency to help ensure county government and the public are prepared for the possibility that COVID-19 will appear within the county.
Various appropriate County departments and agencies have been working together since Jan. 25 to prepare for the possible arrival of the virus within the county. The County Department of Public Health activated its Department Operations Center on Feb. 13.
County Public Health continues to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the California Department of Public Health to respond to reports of COVID-19.
As with any virus, especially during the cold and flu season, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your health and those around you:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wash hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose or mouth, especially with unwashed hands.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
- If someone does become sick with respiratory symptoms like fever and cough, they should stay away from work, school or other people to avoid spreading illness and seek assistance from their healthcare provider if symptoms become severe.
- N95 masks are not recommended outside a healthcare setting. Surgical masks can be worn by sick individuals to reduce the likelihood of spreading germs to others.

If you already have a respiratory infection, but do not know if it’s the virus, is it best to stay home or go get tested just in case you do have the virus? My children and I have been sick for a while with respiratory infections.
Well the mental health dept doesn’t close its doors and they still have the Deal with the public mentally ill public are you going to be able to test your workers on a regular basis for this virus and case they get sick and due to the fact that they have to stay open
Please provide details for transparency and to keep the public informed so we can protect ourselves! Where did the woman live? Is community spread from SB County suspected? Did she come into contact with others? If so, where/when? How many tests have been given in SB County? Are all persons with the relevant combination of symptoms or history of exposure through travel/contact being tested?

So if the county is doing “everything they can” to help stop this virus…why are they still allowing state facilities like DMV to be open?! These buildings are breeding grounds for this virus. Mandate they close and protect the public.

Does this include churches? Can churches meet in smaller groups? We have are a small church with 17 members, can we still meet? Can we meet for Bible Studies of 10 or less?
My husband is in the high risk group
He is a C6C7 incomplete quadriplegic, currently with g tube due to lack of speech and shallow. He was in a ventilator for 6 months, trake was in a total of 8 months. Today is my husbands 1 year anniversary of SCI injury.
We are currently supplied well.

San Bernardino county is the largest county in Calif! Can you at least give us an idea of the vicinity of the 3 cases and their circumstances… recent airline passengers, healthcare employees, etc? If you can’t give us more information tell us why not? Why are you so secretive to the nth degree? What do you think will happen? We are adults trying to come to terms with this distressing situation, being treated like children or worse is not helpful or justified.

how would self-employed workers be protected? Such as truck drivers. My husband hasn’t stopped a day, rain or no rain. Worked slowed down since warehouse workers are worried of catching the coronavirus, they haven’t showed up for work, making it harder for truck drivers to get home safe.

This information is detailed and thorough and very appreciative for this publication. What I cannot understand is why retail stores that provide no vital need are still opened, i.e., Bass Pro Shops. I was there briefly on Monday and realized, “What am I doing here?” I was so disheartened when I saw the amount of people in the store and how it was business as usual. This retailer, along with all other entertainment retails pose zero need to the public during this pandemic that’s a matter of life and death and poses a significant threat to the compromised and healthy public never bring a stop, instead a spread of this wicked invisible enemy. I hope to see this county shut down retailers that are of no daily essential needs and only brings people together in close quarters who disrespect the well being of others.

There are people who are working within the county where I’m located who are coughing and sneezing, and are not going home. This includes some managers as well. My concern is I am exposed to this. Can people who are coughing and sneezing be ordered to stay home. Or, for my safety, can I volunteer to stay home to not be exposed to this. But, I want to still be paid. I should not have to suffer because other people are being selfish.
Being the largest county in the USA, we would expect that you could give us additional information. Not on the person, but the locations within this very large area. You can identify the hospital or city or closest city if unincorporated area. This is expected as we are doing our best as citizens. Also, what the county orders for gathering sizes should be applied to the county workers as well. rotating shifts, etc. social distancing, cleaning and sanitary products for shared spaces.
I don’t understand how you guys are asking for people not to have gatherings when stores are still open, people are still going to work. We have a small business in Hesperia, Ca. High Desert Sports Training is a training center for school age athletes. Typically 7 years old up to 25 years old. We also have batting cages, bullpens & an open turf area. With all local schools and sporting activities being shut down, we are about to suffer greatly. I operate spa business in the county and understand our jobs involves with direct physical contact to our clients and already closed operation the business on March 16th . I tried to reach out to the city to get a clear direction for our business type but nobody responded either phone call or email . My questions will be are there any help from the county for small business in this situation because we still have to pay for all expensive to keep the business and also we have to pay personal expensive as home rental and more.. ? I am sure the county will fight with us through this crisis and we are willing to do what it take to help public safety also our workers safety but it’s tough for us small businesses and everybody in this situation. There are many places of business that are still conducting business. Those of which are in direct contact with the public. I am speaking about the beauty industry. These people will not stop working as there is no financial support for them. Please put a stop to this. Help this industry. These are self-employed people that support this community. This virus will spread if they are not forced to close. It is not a necessary service. It can wait.
Can you please provide information as to how individuals in San Bernardino County who tested positive may have contracted their infections? Specifically, was it from traveling abroad, or was the origin “unknown.” This information can help people assess whether there is an undetected outbreak in the community, considering the information we’ve been receiving that what we are seeing now is a snapshot of what was actually going on 2 weeks ago.

If you live in an unincorporated area of the County, the Board of Supervisors has imposed a moratorium on evictions. If you live in a City, you may want to check with your city council to see if they have taken similar action.
