Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason is pleased to present another fascinating story of the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.
Louis A. Desmond was selected to fill the remainder of Louis Irus Coy’s term as San Bernardino County tax collector after he passed away at the age of 48 following an automobile accident. Coy, originally elected in 1898, served three terms as the county tax collector until 1908. Once he passed, the citizens of San Bernardino County united behind Desmond as their new candidate. Desmond was elected and then re-elected, serving as the county’s tax collector from 1908 to 1915.
During his tenure, he introduced several new reforms that brought thousands of dollars into the county treasury. For years, land with delinquent taxes drifted along without bringing in revenue. By advertising these properties, Desmond pressured owners to pay their overdue taxes to the county.
Desmond’s leadership had a lasting impact on the county’s finances, which contributed to his legacy as a dedicated public servant.
