San Bernardino County Public Works recently installed a new High Intensity Activated CrossWalK (HAWK) beacon signal at the intersection of 5th Street and Pedley Road, near Monterey Elementary in San Bernardino.
This signal is designed to enhance pedestrian safety by making it easier and safer for students and parents to cross the busy 75-foot-wide intersection, where speeding has been a significant issue. During school hours, 80 percent of vehicles exceed the 25-mph limit, posing a serious risk. With the support of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, San Bernardino City Unified School District and the City of San Bernardino, this $888,000 project — funded by Senate Bill 1 and a Community Development Block Grant — includes new traffic signals, ADA-compliant improvements and a vinyl-wrapped traffic cabinet. This initiative aligns with San Bernardino County’s commitment to well-planned development and the safety of its residents.
