This week’s history column returns to another fascinating story of the many great county residents who have served in Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason’s position since 1853.
Errol J. Mackzum became the county’s auditor-controller after Jack Bulmer retired. Prior to his election, he served as assistant auditor-controller under Bulmer’s administration before holding the position from 1979 to 1998.
Mackzum’s first order of business as auditor-controller was increasing fees for several documents processed in the office. The rates had not changed in years, which caused San Bernardino County’s fees to remain lower than neighboring counties. After serving as auditor-controller, Mackzum was elected to the Board of Directors for the Runnings Spring Water District.
