The Department of Public Health’s Nutrition and Wellness Services (NWS) partnered with the Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District’s Child Nutrition Services to host a festive Rethink Your Drink event during the lunch periods at Yucaipa High School.

The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) CalFresh Healthy Living program promoted healthier beverage choices and raised awareness on the health risks of sugar-sweetened beverages statewide throughout the month of September with the new Rethink Your Drink kick off campaign.  During these events, CDPH’s CalFresh Healthy Living program aimed to help families in California establish a lifetime of healthy habits.

The Yucaipa High School event engaged students in interactive activities that highlighted the hidden sugars in popular beverages and identified the health risks associated with the regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as, type two diabetes, heart disease and tooth decay.  The event featured an educational display and taste testing of infused water recipes that encouraged students to choose water as a healthier beverage option. More than 240 students sampled the infused water and engaged in the activities.

In addition, the county’s oral health program, Smile SBC, educated students on the effects of sugar consumption on oral health and provided fun giveaways. Music was also provided by KGGI-FM who gave away prizes to students that participated in the interactive activities. This event was highly successful, and plans are underway to organize another Rethink Your Drink initiative in the near future.
