
May 18 marked the 61st anniversary of Head Start, a milestone celebrating more than six decades of empowering children, strengthening families and supporting communities nationwide. Since 1965, Head Start has served more than 40 million children and families through comprehensive early childhood education and family support services. Today, the program continues to help children build strong foundations for lifelong success.
San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department proudly continues that legacy by serving more than 2,200 children and families across 30 locations throughout San Bernardino County.
More than preschool: Supporting the whole family
Preschool Services offers far more than preschool. Through center-based classrooms, home-based services and strong community partnerships, the department provides comprehensive, no-cost services designed to support the whole child and family.
Families enrolled in Preschool Services programs may receive access to:
- High-quality early childhood education
- Nutritious meals and health screenings
- Developmental and disability support services
- Mental health and wellness resources
- Family-centered coaching and goal setting
- Referrals for housing, employment and community resources
- Adult literacy and educational opportunities
- Career pathway and apprenticeship support
Preschool Servicesโ goal is to ensure children are prepared for kindergarten while families feel supported, informed and empowered every step of the way.
Programs designed for every stage
Head Start
Provides children ages three to five with classroom environments that promote school readiness, confidence and lifelong learning.
Early Head Start
Supports infants, toddlers and pregnant women through early learning experiences and comprehensive family services.
Home-based programs
Provides personalized home visits and support services for families with children ages zero to five.
Now enrolling for the 2026โ2027 program year
Enrollment for the upcoming program year begins July 6, and applications are accepted year-round.

Visit San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department or call 888-KIDS-025 to apply. Families can complete the Family Pre-Application and connect with a Preschool Services team member to finalize enrollment.
