Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason is pleased to present another riveting story of the many great county residents who have served in his position since 1853.
Oscar Valdez began his career with San Bernardino County in 2000 as an internal auditor in the Auditor-Controller/Recorder’s office. He was promoted through the ranks, serving as general accounting supervisor, accounting manager and interim chief deputy controller, which included directing activities for the General Accounting, Fund Accounting, Property Tax, Accounts Payable and Payroll sections.
In addition, Valdez served as interim accounts payable manager and general accounting supervisor during his tenure with the Auditor-Controller/Recorder’s Office. He was responsible for developing procedures for accounting and reporting practices consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
From 2006 through 2010, Valdez was the finance officer for the Treasurer-Tax Collector/Public Administrator’s office for San Bernardino County. As a finance officer, he provided accounting and financial services for the Treasurer, Tax Collector and Public Administration divisions. In part, this included budget preparation, financial reports and internal controls.
From 2011 to 2016, Valdez served as the assistant auditor-controller/treasurer/tax collector and was responsible for managing and overseeing the Auditor, Controller, Disbursements and Treasurer divisions for San Bernardino County. On February 17, 2016, Valdez was appointed by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to fill the vacated position of auditor-controller/treasurer/tax collector. He served in this position until 2019.
Before joining the county, Valdez was an audit supervisor for Vicenti, Lloyd & Stutzman LLP, which included planning and performing financial and compliance audits for a variety of areas such as colleges, K-12 schools and non-profit organizations.
From 1986-1991, Valdez served honorably in the United States Army as a sergeant in the 782nd Maintenance Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, and with the 758th Maintenance Company, attached to 18th Airborne Corps, during Operation Desert Storm.
