American Society of Civil Engineers recognize county for innovative park projects

Public Works Assistant Director Byanka Velasco, Public Works Director Noel Castillo, Regional Parks Director Beahta Davis and Assistant Public Works Director David Doublet received two American Association of Civil Engineering (ASCE) Awards.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Works – Special Districts Division, in partnership with the Regional Parks Department, is honored to announce its recent recognition by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The division received two prestigious awards for the Glen Helen Lighting Project and the Kessler Park Revitalization Project, highlighting its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and community enhancement.

The Sustainable Engineering Project Award was given for the Glen Helen Lighting Project, which involved the installation of solar-powered LED lights throughout Glen Helen Regional Park’s drive aisles and parking lots. This project included the construction of concrete bases, installation of metal poles, solar modules and lighting fixtures. The new solar lighting system boosts safety and security by improving visibility across the park, supporting a wide range of events and activities. Furthermore, the use of solar-powered lighting promotes energy efficiency and sustainability.

In addition, Public Works-Special Districts and Regional Parks earned the Parks and Recreation Project Award for the Kessler Park Revitalization Project. Funded by the Bloomington Community Benefit/Improvement Reserve, the American Rescue Plan Act, and Fifth Supervisorial District discretionary funds, this project enhances Kessler Park’s facilities to better serve the community of Bloomington. The revitalization includes upgrades to support increased baseball and softball activities, a brand-new Snack Bar, installation of high speed wi-fi and other corridor improvements that will create more recreational opportunities and foster community pride. The improved park will continue to be a welcoming gathering space that promotes well-being, strengthens social connections and provides a safe environment for residents of all ages to enjoy.

These projects reflect the Department of Public Works’ dedication to delivering high-quality public services and enhancing the quality of life for San Bernardino County residents. With continued innovation and commitment, the department is excited to bring more community-centered improvements in the future.
