Over the Super Bowl weekend, the San Bernardino County Probation Department conducted unannounced home compliance checks to ensure offenders being supervised for alcohol-related offenses were following their court-ordered conditions of probation.

The potential for alcohol consumption is typically higher on Super Bowl Sunday. Probation Officers contacted 65 probationers with prior convictions for driving under the influence (DUI) offenses. Probationers were required to submit to a Preliminary Alcohol Screening (PAS) test to check for the presence of alcohol in their system. Additionally, their homes and vehicles were searched for alcohol, drugs and other paraphernalia. Although most were found in compliance, five were arrested for probation violations, one for an outstanding warrant, and one subject was arrested for possession of ammunition.

“The decision to drink and drive puts lives at risk. These compliance checks over Super Bowl weekend are a strategy we utilize to ensure those under our supervision stay on track with their treatment plan,” said Chief Probation Officer Tracy Reece. “Proactive law enforcement initiatives and personal responsibility can significantly reduce the number of alcohol-related traffic deaths over Super Bowl weekend.”

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
