San Bernardino County, the largest by area in the nation, faces unique challenges in ensuring residents can access the courts. The Mobile Defense Program addresses these barriers by bringing court access and legal services directly to the remote areas of the county. Through a retrofitted RV, clients can resolve legal barriers by connecting virtually to court to clear bench warrants, modify probation and resolve outstanding fines.
“It’s important for our department to ensure that everyone in this county has access to court,” Public Defender Thomas W. Sone said. “Regardless of where you live — Needles, Barstow, up in the mountains. That’s what makes the Mobile Defense Program so important.”
In partnership with the San Bernardino Superior Court and county agencies, the program also provides health, employment and social services, ensuring equitable access to justice and community support. This collaborative approach strengthens community trust while ensuring equitable access to justice for all residents.
“I want everyone to be able to have access to justice, to the courts and to my department,” Sone added. “No one should be denied because of any geographical challenges or economic barriers that exist.”
Looking ahead, the Public Defender’s Office plans to continue growing the Mobile Defense Program by reaching more communities across the county next year. The next Mobile Defense Program event will be held at the Adelanto Plaza & Event Center on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
