San Bernardino County’s Children and Family Services Independent Living Program (ILP) recently hosted Independent City 2025, an interactive event designed to prepare foster and probation youth ages 16 to 20 for the transition to adulthood.

This immersive experience gave foster and probation youth the opportunity to practice adult responsibilities in a supportive, risk-free setting before facing these challenges in real life. Youth navigated real-world scenarios, such as managing money, making housing decisions, choosing transportation options, balancing family life and grocery shopping, among many other challenges. The hands-on learning experience also covered important topics, such as employment and college life.

“I think these programs are really important for youth, especially in our county,” said Lana, a participant in the event. “I think it’s a helpful resource for kids like us.”

The program is part of the department’s ongoing commitment to ensuring young people have the tools and resources they need to thrive as they enter adulthood. By providing practical experience and knowledge, Children and Family Services aim to empower youth to build stable, successful futures.
