CONFIRE Dispatcher Jessica Trice recalls the moment she guided a family through a home birth over the phone.

During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, San Bernardino County Fire is proud to recognize the dedicated individuals who serve behind the scenes. These professionals are often the first point of contact in an emergency, offering steady guidance, clear instructions, and dependable support when it matters most.

One recent call reminded us just how vital that calm voice can be.

CONFIRE Dispatcher Jessica Trice answered a call from a family whose daughter had gone into labor at home. The baby was arriving fast and every second mattered. Without hesitation, Jessica calmly assessed the situation and began walking the family through each step of the delivery process.

“Can you see any part of the baby now?” she asked. When the father confirmed the baby’s head was visible, Jessica responded with focus and encouragement. “Do not prevent her from pushing. If that baby is ready to come out, we are going to deliver the baby.”

Jessica remained on the line steady and composed as she coached the dad through catching his newborn daughter. She guided the family through wiping the baby’s mouth and nose and making sure the infant was breathing safely.

At 3:23 p.m., a healthy baby girl was born. She was delivered safely at home with Jessica’s guidance before paramedics arrived on scene.

This moment is just one example of the extraordinary work dispatchers do every day. They may not be seen, but their impact is felt in every emergency call answered every instruction given and every life touched on the other end of the line.

To Jessica and to every voice like hers we say thank you. You are the calm in the chaos, the unseen support in moments of fear, and a vital part of the County Fire mission to protect life and property.

San Bernardino County Fire is proud to recognize and honor you during this special week and every day after. Thank you, dispatchers!
