Saturday clinics offer school vaccines

Summer Immunization Clinics offer school-required vaccines with flexible weekend hours for busy parents.

Heading back to school? Make sure your child is ready. Vaccines keep them healthy, protected and prepared for a successful year. San Bernardino County Department of Public Health community health centers continue to offer convenient appointments through the Saturday Summer Immunization Clinic.

To support working parents and guardians, the clinics offer flexible weekend hours to help ensure students in grades K–12 meet school vaccination requirements. Students must provide schools with records showing they’ve received the following immunizations:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, Tdap, or Td)
  • Polio (OPV or IPV)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (chickenpox)

Connect with Child Support Services during Support Saturday

Join us on Aug. 16 for Support Saturday to receive child support assistance.

San Bernardino County Child Support Services is committed to providing accessible opportunities for parents to connect with the support they need. Understanding that many parents face scheduling conflicts or other barriers that make visiting during standard business hours difficult, the department is introducing Support Saturday: Let Us Help You.  

The first Support Saturday: Let Us Help You event will be held at the Loma Linda office on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Child Support representatives will assist parents with a wide range of services in a welcoming environment during this extended-hours event. 

Services offered include: 

  • Meet one-on-one with Child Support representatives. 
  • Ask questions and get personalized case information. 
  • Enroll in child support services on-site. 
  • Use computers for quick application assistance. 
  • Receive help with case modifications, including a review to determine if parents qualify and immediate access to the paperwork needed to get started. 

Parents can complete the application process in 20 minutes or less with the support of department representatives. Victor Valley Museum’s Second Saturdays soar with “Flying High Kite Creations”

Soar into Victor Valley Museum for Second Saturdays on Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. to let your creativity take flight! Regular museum admission applies.

Part of the museum’s popular monthly Second Saturdays series was designed to ignite imagination and spark hands-on learning. This fun-filled program invites visitors of all ages to build and decorate their own custom kites while exploring the science behind flight, wind and aerodynamics. Museum staff will guide guests through the process, blending art, engineering and play.

“This event brings together creativity and STEM in a way that kids and families can truly enjoy,” said Curator of Visitor Engagement Tiffany Talavera. “It’s the perfect opportunity to connect, craft and learn something new.”

Materials for the kite making workshop will be included in regular museum admission. Don’t forget that frozen treats will be available for purchase too! Family fun guaranteed! County Museum invites teachers to their first-ever educator open house

The San Bernardino County Museum (SBCM) is proud to host its first annual educator open house on Thursday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum in Redlands. This free event is open to all K-12 educators, school administrators, curriculum coordinators and homeschool networks throughout the Inland Empire and beyond.

Designed with educators in mind, the open house offers a hands-on introduction to the museum’s wide range of field trip opportunities, loan kits, STEAM-based programming and educational partnerships. Attendees will have the chance to preview interactive exhibits, explore classroom resources, and engage directly with education staff to learn how to integrate museum content into their lesson plans.

“This event is our way of thanking educators for the work they do and showing them how the museum can be a partner in their classrooms,” said Erica Watkins, museum educator at SBCM. “We’re excited to share new programs and tools that bring local culture, history, and science to life for students.”

Catfish night derby offers top cash under the stars at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park

San Bernardino County Regional Parks invites you to attend the August Catfish Night Derby.

Regional Parks is excited to welcome back night fishing opportunities for all ages with the catfish derby at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Check-in and registration begins at 4 p.m. and prepaid derby fees are encouraged. Fees are $20 per person and $15 per vehicle. A fishing license is required for all participants ages 16 years and older. A food truck will be on-site for those wanting to purchase food.

Participants will receive a wristband and packet with derby entry forms and rules. The derby is rain or shine and no refunds will be given.

Regional Parks will have a weigh-in station available and encourages participants to allow plenty of time to weigh and enter their fish prior to the 12 a.m. cutoff time.

Derby cash prizes will be awarded for:

  • First place: $1,000
  • Second place: $500
  • Third place: $250

Winners do not need to be present to claim their prize(s). Winners will be announced at approximately 12:15 a.m. at the Regional Parks weigh-in station at the snack bar near the lake.

Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park is located at 800 N. Archibald Ave. in Ontario (next to Top Golf). Park summer hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

For the derby, 1,050 lbs. of catfish will be stocked on Friday, Aug. 22. Due to the derby, the lakes will be closed on stocking day. There will be no public fishing while the lakes are closed for the derby from Friday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 a.m. through Sunday morning, Aug. 24 at 7:30 a.m.

Free community clean-up event for San Bernardino residents

Free community clean-up event in San Bernardino on Saturday, Aug. 23—dispose of bulky items, tires and e-waste.

The San Bernardino County Code Enforcement and Solid Waste Management Divisions will be providing bulky trash collection containers for the FREE disposal of accumulated trash, e-waste, tires and on-site confidential document shredding for unincorporated residents only. No business materials will be accepted. Free disposal services will end at noon or when the equipment is full.

  • This program is limited to the residents of the unincorporated county areas.
  • We cannot accept commercial or industrial waste from businesses. Please remember to safely secure and properly cover your loads prior to traveling to the event.
  • If you are bringing waste tires, please limit your load to a maximum of nine tires. (State Law prohibits hauling of more than nine tires, unless an exemption is granted. Please call us for more information). Tires on rims will be accepted.

Please note: You are required to unload your own waste materials.  

If you have oversized, loose, or hard-to-handle loads, you may be turned away to dispose of your waste materials at your own expense. We will accept household trash, bulky items, green waste and vehicle tires (we do notaccept concrete). The Urban Conservation Corps will be present to accept electronics (TVs, computer monitors, VCRs, stereos, cell phones and more).

We cannot accept hazardous waste. This includes motor oil and oil filters, antifreeze, gasoline, drain cleaner, pesticides, fertilizers, fluorescent lights, wood preservatives, pool and hobby supplies, auto/furniture polish, paint thinners, paint products, medications or similar products.

Stargazing and summertime pet safety collide at the next Cosmic Nights event at the San Bernardino County Museum (SBCM). In partnership with the San Bernardino Valley Amateur Astronomers (SBVAA) and San Bernardino County Animal Care, join us on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 7-10 p.m. for an evening of celestial exploration, hands-on fun, and educational tips from animal experts.

“While our Cosmic Nights events always aim to connect our guests to the cosmos, this time we’re also bringing the message down to Earth with practical advice that can save lives,” said Curator of Education Eliana Zacarias. “We’re proud to collaborate with the San Bernardino County Animal Care team to help families care for both their curiosity and their companions.”

Event highlights include:

  • Live stargazing through high-powered telescopes from SBCVAA
  • Pet safety demos, make-your-own pet bandana station, and educational resources from Animal Care
  • Local food vendors specializing in hot dogs, specialty coffee and lemonade, and shaved ice
  • Museum galleries open for after-hours exploration

Admission to Cosmic Nights is included with paid museum entry. All ages are welcome, and families are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for stargazing on the museum grounds.

State of the County 2025: Building a Stronger Tomorrow

Each year, this high-profile event attracts a wide range of business, government and community leaders looking to gain insight into what makes San Bernardino County a leading choice for business investment and job creation.

The 2025 State of the County, themed “Building A Stronger Tomorrow Together,” will be hosted by Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe, and will include an overview from each of the county supervisors on the individuals, companies and places that are leading remarkable growth across the region. Topics to be explored include manufacturing, technology, mining, tourism and workforce development.

“San Bernardino County is a region rich with natural resources, passionate entrepreneurs, innovative industries and committed business leaders who are investing in the future,” said Rowe. “Our State of the County provides a fantastic platform to share why San Bernardino County is the leading choice for tourism, business, and population growth.”

The event includes a presentation from the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP) Inland Empire chapter, who will host a pre-event panel from 3-4:30 p.m. Registration for the State of the County will start at 4:30 p.m., with the main event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Following the State of the County, a business networking event featuring live entertainment and heavy hors d’oeuvres will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Victor Valley Museum (VVM) is excited to present “Here Comes the Sun: Solar Science & Spirituality,” an awe-inspiring imagery experience to visitors through a floor-to-ceiling projection with footage of the sun provided by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The exhibit is now open and will run through Sunday, Nov. 23.

This original, thought-provoking exhibition invites visitors to explore the profound relationship between humanity and the sun — blending the rigor of science with the richness of spiritual and cultural traditions from around the region.

Here Comes the Sun brings together regional artifacts, an interactive display, and immersive experiences that celebrate the sun as both a star at the center of our solar system and a powerful symbol across the county.

“This exhibition is more than just a scientific journey,” said Dr. Casey Lee, curator of art and exhibits. “It’s an exploration of how the sun has shaped our beliefs, our environment, and our future. Visitors will leave with a deeper appreciation for the sun’s role in both the natural world and human culture.”

Highlights of the exhibition include:

  • An immersive floor-to-ceiling projection of Solarium provided by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.
  • SBCM collection artifacts from archaeology, earth sciences, history and integrated biology on how they have been impacted or played a role by the sun.
  • A hands-on interactive plasma ball.
