San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department educators and staff focused on professional growth and wellness for classroom success during the department’s annual PreService training on Aug. 15 at the Ontario Convention Center.
For the past 16 years, the training has equipped teachers and staff with the newest resources and methods to help every child reach their potential.
“You can make a difference in shaping someone’s life and watching them grow. You are the spark to them,” said San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Joe Baca, Jr., a former educator. “We’re blessed to have you, and I’m glad you care about our kids and our community because they are going to go on and do great things.”
San Bernardino County CEO Luther Snoke said, “You set our children on a better course to be able to not just go into school, but to go into life and to succeed.”
This year’s theme, Recharging Educators for Every Classroom Moment, emphasized the importance of self-care in creating positive learning environments.
“Self-care is not a luxury in education—it’s a necessity,” said Preschool Services Director Arlene Molina. “When educators feel their best, they can give their best to the children they serve.”
The training consisted of 20 sessions covering topics from classroom strategies, inclusion, and STEM education to mindfulness, stress relief, and caregiver support. Educators also explored practical ways to incorporate self-care into daily routines, ensuring they can better support their students.
In addition, Preschool Services staff learnedabout the county’s application and hiring processes, gained successful interviewing tips, and explored highlights of existing career ladders within early childhood education. Staff were guided through the process the county uses to receive and evaluate applications and received general feedback on how to improve their online applications. The training also included Preschool Services’ own success stories with feedback and encouragement for staff.
Modeling self-care benefits both teachers and children. When educators practice mindfulness and emotional regulation, they set an example for young learners, helping them build resilience and healthy habits that extend beyond the classroom.
These strategies support academic and social growth, creating a nurturing environment where both students and staff thrive. The ripple effect strengthens families and the community.
The Preschool Services Department remains dedicated to empowering teachers, supporting families and preparing children for lifelong success.
Preschool Services provides a nurturing environment where children can play, learn and develop the skills needed to prepare for school. Parents and guardians also benefit by becoming actively involved, learning how to be positive role models, and building their capacity as advocates for their children.
Preschool Services is equally a place where staff can grow professionally and personally, making meaningful and lasting contributions in the lives of children and families. We welcome all those interested in joining the Preschool Services team and experiencing the rewarding benefits of early childhood education.
