Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector (ATC) Ensen Mason is honored to present another compelling story of the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.
Samuel Jones Rolfe was born in Concord, New Hampshire, in August 1794. He was the son of Benjamin Rolfe and Mary (Molly) Swett. He moved to Maine in 1810 and married Elizabeth Hathaway in March 1818. He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and moved to Kirtland, Ohio by March 1835. On Jan. 15, 1836, Rolfe was appointed to serve as an assistant doorkeeper of the Kirtland Temple. However, due to religious persecution, Rolfe and his wife moved to Caldwell County, Missouri in 1837.
Once again, religious persecution prompted the couple to relocate to Clayton, Illinois before settling in Nauvoo, Illinois by 1841. On Jan. 19, 1841, Rolfe was selected by Joseph Smith, Jr., founder of the Church of the Latter-day Saints, to preside over the Nauvoo High Priests Quorum. He was later ordained as a high priest on Nov. 12, 1845.
Rolfe and his wife moved to Salt Lake Valley, Utah in September 1847 and then settled in San Bernardino, California in 1851. Before moving back to Utah, Rolfe was elected to serve as county treasurer from 1856 to 1857. He passed away in July 1869 at the age of 74.
