On Saturday, Aug. 31, the San Bernardino County Code Enforcement Division led a successful multi-agency off-road and trespass enforcement operation in response to public concerns about illegal off-highway vehicle (OHV) activity and trespassing in sensitive environmental areas. The operation involved allied agencies, including law enforcement and environmental conservation teams.
The focus was on neighborhoods near flood control channels in areas such as Lytle Creek, Cajon Creek, Devils Diversion, Warm Creek and the Santa Ana River. These regions, which encompass unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County as well as parts of San Bernardino, Rialto and Colton, have seen an increase in illegal OHV activity and environmental trespassing. The operation aimed to address these issues through law enforcement and public education.
As a result of the coordinated effort, eight citations were issued for trespassing and parking violations. Additionally, 52 educational contacts were made. No major incidents, injuries or complaints from residents were reported. One OHV was impounded by the Sheriff’s Department, and a vehicle fire was promptly extinguished by local fire personnel. No arrests were made.
In addition to enforcement, the operation included a homeless outreach initiative. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s H.O.P.E. Team engaged with 22 unhoused individuals in the Santa Ana River area, providing referrals to essential services. Among those contacted, one military veteran was connected to veteran-specific resources, and 16 individuals expressed interest in receiving further assistance.
The Code Enforcement Division emphasizes its commitment to preserving endangered species and promoting community safety through ongoing enforcement and outreach efforts. With the help of allied agencies, including the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Colton Police Department, City of San Bernardino Police Department, California Highway Patrol, California Fish and Wildlife, San Bernardino County Regional Parks Rangers and Riverside County Regional Parks Rangers, these efforts significantly reduced illegal OHV activity and trespassing in the area during this past Labor Day weekend.
