San Bernardino County Museum Senior Curator Kathleen Springer will give a presentation, “Hunting for mammoths and clues of climates past at Joshua Tree National Park,” at the museum on Sunday, January 26. The program starts at 2:00 p.m. and is included with paid museum admission.
The program will provide an overview of the work of the County Museum’s geological sciences division in the national park over the past decade.
“The team at the SBCM has discovered an amazing variety of late Pleistocene fossils from this vast national park,” said Springer, “with concurrent geological investigations in the park revealing new fossil bearing deposits never before known. We’ve had some shocking results!”
She will summarize the museum’s ongoing attempts to “date” the rocks by various methods, and will show the link to climatic perturbations during the Ice Ages that left a record of plentiful water and the animals who exploited it in the now—very dry—Colorado Desert.
The San Bernardino County Museum is at the California Street exit from Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 5pm. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child aged 5 to 12). Children under five and Museum Association members are admitted free. Parking is free.
