The San Bernardino County Library is ready to make waves this summer with the launch of its annual Summer Reading Program (SRP), “Catch the Wave!” running June 8 through Aug. 2 at library branches across the county.

Readers of all ages are invited to dive into a summer packed with books, activities and shore-to-please events designed to keep minds active and imaginations swimming all season long. From toddlers to adults, participants can log reading, reel in prizes and ride the tide of discovery through free programs and hands-on experiences.

Participants can register beginning June 8 through the library’s Beanstack portal or at their local branch library.

“This year’s Summer Reading Program invites the community to surf into stories, explore new horizons and ‘seas’ the day through reading and learning,” said County Librarian Melanie Orosco. “Whether you’re flipping pages by the pool or diving into a new genre, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

Throughout the summer, library branches will host a wave of free events and educational entertainment, including:

  • Live performances and interactive shows
  • Family storytimes and themed programs
  • Teen and adult engagement events
  • Reading challenges and prize opportunities

The SRP helps prevent summer learning loss while encouraging lifelong literacy, creativity and community connection. Families are encouraged to “shell-e-brate” the season by visiting their local library and participating in programs designed to make reading part of every summer adventure.

From the far reaches of the galaxy to your local library shelves, an action-packed adventure awaits. Choose your side in the legendary Intergalactic Fan Wars, happening this month at a library near you.

This month, San Bernardino County Library branches will transform into immersive battlegrounds of imagination during “Intergalactic Fan Wars,” an all-ages celebration, inviting the community to take part in the ultimate sci-fi showdown: “Star Wars vs. Star Trek.”

Blending reading incentives with fandom excitement, the program encourages patrons to explore the library’s extensive collections while pledging allegiance to their favorite universe. Whether inspired by the Force or captivated by the final frontier, patrons can earn themed rewards simply by doing what they do best — reading!

Throughout the month, patrons who check out 30 items will have the opportunity to select a special incentive aligned with their chosen fandom. Designed to delight both Jedi and Starfleet loyalists, these rewards offer a fun and interactive way to celebrate personal interests while promoting literacy and community engagement.

“‘Intergalactic Fan Wars’ is about more than choosing sides — it’s about bringing people together through stories that have inspired generations,” said Assistant County Librarian Kristin Stevens. “We’re excited to create an experience where reading becomes a shared adventure, and every checkout fuels the fun.”

In addition to literacy-based activities, select events will feature face painters and balloon artists, giving children the chance to transform into their favorite intergalactic heroes, villains and explorers—bringing the excitement of epic space adventures to life.

As part of the celebration, patrons who meet their branch’s checkout requirements during Intergalactic Fan Wars will earn a themed reward aligned with their chosen universe, along with an opportunity to win a grand prize. County Library adjusts Highland Farmers Market time to later evening hours

In response to strong community participation and valuable public feedback, the San Bernardino County Library Highland Branch Farmers Market is adjusting its weekly hours of operation from 2-7 p.m. to 3-8 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning immediately.

The decision to revise the schedule was made after receiving input from residents who expressed interest in extended evening access to better accommodate work, school and family schedules.

Following a highly successful debut earlier this spring, the Highland Branch Farmers Market has quickly become a vibrant weekly gathering space where fresh produce, local vendors and community connection come together. Hosted in partnership with the California Farmers Market Collective (CFMC), the market continues to draw enthusiastic attendance and support from the Highland community.

Held at the Highland Sam J. Racadio Library and Environmental Learning Center, the market features a curated lineup of regional farmers, artisans and food vendors. Guests can enjoy offerings from local favorites including Bon Jour Yogurt, Native Farms Hummus, Nicky’s Pizza, Grateful Dough Sourdough, Good Juju Coffee and Great Day Farms, alongside a rotating selection of seasonal fruits, vegetables and handcrafted goods.

The market also accepts SNAP/EBT benefits, helping ensure all residents have access to fresh, nutritious food options.

“We truly value the feedback we’ve received from our community,” said Branch Manager Sarah Bartlett. “Adjusting the market hours allows more families, working residents and students the opportunity to participate and enjoy everything the market has to offer. We’re excited to continue growing this event alongside our community.”

In addition to supporting local agriculture and small businesses, the market continues to promote literacy and library engagement through a special incentive program. Patrons who check out 15 library items receive a ticket redeemable for a custom tote bag designed for carrying books and market finds alike.

“The response from the community has been incredible,” said CFMC Founder Alexander Vallejos. “Extending the hours gives even more people the opportunity to gather, shop local and enjoy this welcoming community space.”

As momentum continues to build, organizers anticipate the Highland Farmers Market will remain a staple weekly event for residents of all ages throughout the season.

The Highland Farmers Market is free to attend and open to the public.
