This National Pet Preparedness Month, the Department of Public Health’s Animal Care Division and Preparedness and Response Program, in collaboration with the county Office of Emergency Services, are sharing tips on pet safety. As temperatures rise during the summer months it is important to always consider your pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe when it is hot outside:

  • Be sure your pets have access to plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Never leave pets in the car. Cars can get hot very quickly, even if the windows are open.
  • Protect your pet’s paws from hot pavement. Check the sidewalk with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet.

Know the signs of overheating in pets, like heavy breathing or sluggishness. Always keep your pets, large animals and livestock in mind when preparing for extreme weather.
