Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason is pleased to present another fascinating story of the many great county residents that have served in his position since 1853.

Sheridan G. Berger relocated from his hometown of Greenberg, Ohio to Ontario, California. He was initially hired as a member of the clerical staff at the Ontario Post Office. In recognition of his dedication, he was later selected to be the postmaster and held that position from 1899 to 1915. Following this position, he was appointed as the county auditor in 1915 and served in that capacity for eight years.

Berger spearheaded the installation of the new accounting system for the Auditor’s Office as recommended by the state Board of Control. During his tenure, he oversaw a significant bond issue for the construction of highways throughout the county.

He was credited with saving the taxpayers of the county hundreds of dollars by his close investigation of all accounts passing through his office.

In terms of community involvement, he was a member of the Ontario Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian church. Berger passed away at the age of 79 at the home of his brother, Homer Berger, after battling a long-term illness. He was survived by his three adult children, one son and two daughters. His wife preceded him in death in 1937.
