This week’s history column will return to another fascinating story of the many great county residents that have served in Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Ensen Mason’s position since 1853.

In a previous column, we discussed the career highlights of John Batchelor from San Bernardino. He served as San Bernardino County tax collector for over 18 years and passed away of heart complications at the age of 69 at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino. Although he had one of the toughest jobs in the county, he was remembered for being courteous and friendly to the people he served.

Following his untimely death, long-time employee Amy Koehler served the rest of his term. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to appoint Koehler to serve as acting tax collector from 1942-1943, making her the first female to hold this position.

In 1955, Amy Koehler was honored for 40 years of county service and presented with 40 roses from her boss. She previously worked for several ATCs including M.W.H. Williams, C.D. Van Wie, C. Fulton Jones, John Batchelor and Sherman Batchelor. After serving in the vacant tax collector position, she retired as chief deputy in the Tax Collector’s office.
