On Oct. 17, millions of people worldwide participated in earthquake drills for this year’s international Great ShakeOut. The Office of Emergency Services (OES) conducted a detailed simulation of a 6.0 magnitude earthquake resulting in light to moderate damage in our region. OES staff members practiced the crucial”Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill, followed by a smooth evacuation managed by our safety coordinator, who ensured everyone was accounted for.
The San Bernardino County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) was activated at a simulated Level 2, enabling staff to test satellite phone communications. Moreover, the EOC successfully tested the Early Earthquake Warning System, confirming its capacity to provide timely alerts during real events.
The drill highlighted the importance of safety and preparedness. OES thanks all participants for their cooperation and commitment to community preparedness.
OES also thanks all of the county departments that participated in a social media challenge and shared photos of their Great ShakeOut experience.
