The San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance Department (TAD) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program successfully served 13,851 taxpayers, processing an impressive $25,560,530 in federal and state refunds and credits.

This exceeds the last tax season by 1,703 taxpayers served, bringing in over $3.2M in additional refunds and credits.

TAD recognized the increasing demand for improved tax services, offering in-person and online services at 12 TAD office locations with the addition of Twentynine Palms and 40 mobile locations. The mobile sites included community organizations, colleges, libraries, and, for the first time, the nonprofit Aspiranet, to assist foster youth taxpayers in the community.

VITA also expanded its program to encompass self-employment returns with expenses. During the pilot of this initiative, the VITA mobile unit assisted 205 taxpayers who would not otherwise have qualified for VITA service.

TAD’s innovative approach underscores its commitment to providing free income tax preparation services to eligible low-income families and individuals throughout San Bernardino County, ensuring access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other federal and state credits. The department was able to bridge the gap for many residents, including San Bernardino County’s foster youth, who might otherwise face challenges in accessing tax assistance and services.

The success of TAD’s efforts highlights the department’s dedication to serving the community and enhancing the financial well-being of its residents. With this achievement, TAD sets a benchmark for public service and community support.

“Saving money on preparation fees can make a substantial difference for taxpayers. We are proud of the VITA program’s positive impact on the community,” said TAD Director James LoCurto.

“These refunds and credits will not only benefit the individuals and families we serve but will also help stimulate the local economy.”
