September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies. This year’s theme, Preparedness Starts at Home, emphasizes the small steps we can all take to make a big difference when emergencies strike. Natural disasters and unexpected events, such as wildfires, flash floods, power outages and extreme weather that can happen at any time.

The Department of Aging and Adult Services – Public Guardian is committed to helping older adults and individuals with disabilities across San Bernardino County stay safe before, during, and after emergencies.  During extreme weather events, natural disasters and other emergencies, the department connects residents with resources directly or, in situations where direct access to clients is limited, coordinates with Emergency Services and other first responders to ensure vulnerable members of our community receive the help they need.

Being prepared helps you stay safe, protect your loved ones, and recover more quickly when emergencies occur. The department encourages older adults, individuals with disabilities, families, and caretakers to learn about potential hazards in their area, create an emergency plan, and build a disaster supply kit with essential items like food, water, medications, and important documents. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for emergency alerts through county’s Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS)  and the  San Bernardino Community Preparedness app to stay informed in real time.

When planning, it’s essential to consider unique needs within your household and community, such as medical conditions, mobility limitations, pets and neighbors who may require assistance. The Department of Aging and Adult Services – Public Guardian website offers a collection of trusted preparedness materials from the California Department of Aging, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, and the American Red Cross. Additional resources are available directly from FEMA’s Ready Campaign and the San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services websites.

By acting today, you can protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Preparedness starts at home — but together, we can build a safer, more resilient San Bernardino County.

For preparedness resources and information about the department’s programs and services, please visit the Department of Aging and Adult Services – Public Guardian website or call Senior Information and Assistance at 800-510-2020 during normal business hours.
