Hit the Books heads into final inning; readers still have time to earn free 66ers tickets

With just days left on the scoreboard, young readers still have time to slide into home. The Hit the Books Reading Program, a partnership between the San Bernardino County Library and the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, is heading into the final inning and will remain open through Saturday, March 7, 2026. That means families still have a chance to step up to the plate and turn their reading streaks into a grand slam of free baseball tickets.

Since launching Jan. 26, the program has invited children and teens ages 0 to 17 to knock childhood literacy out of the park. The game plan is simple: for every five books read and logged in Beanstack โ€” along with a checkout receipt showing five books borrowed from a county library branch โ€” participants earn a special Hit the Books bookmark.

And that bookmark is their ticket to the big leagues.

Each bookmark can be redeemed for two free Inland Empire 66ers baseball game tickets at the teamโ€™s ticket office. Readers can round the bases up to three times during the program, earning as many as three bookmarks โ€” good for two and potentially up to six tickets per child. For families looking to fill the stands this summer, thatโ€™s a home run opportunity.

Thereโ€™s no purchase necessary to participate, and bookmarks cannot be combined with any other offer. All earned bookmarks must be redeemed by Aug. 30, 2026.

Library staff across county branches are still in the dugout cheering participants on, helping young readers keep their eye on the ball as they log books and collect receipts. Whether itโ€™s picture books, graphic novels or chapter books, every completed title moves readers one base closer to crossing home plate.

With the final pitch approaching, organizers are encouraging families not to strike out on the chance. Thereโ€™s still time to dig in, swing for the fences and score a memorable game-day experience โ€” proving once again that when libraries and baseball team up, everyone wins.

Mark your calendars for March 2026! We’re throwing a party for the legends of the page. Think Paddington, Curious George and more!

Beloved storybook favorites, including Paddington Bear, Curious George and If You Give a Moose a Muffin, will take center stage this March as the San Bernardino County Library launches Classic Characters Month, a celebration featuring family-friendly programs, interactive activities and special incentives at 23 library branches throughout the county.

Designed to spark imagination and strengthen literacy, Classic Characters Month invites children and families to rediscover iconic characters through themed crafts, read-alouds, creative activities and character-inspired events held throughout the month.

โ€œOur libraries are a place where stories come alive,โ€ said County Library Program Coordinator Elizabeth Williams. โ€œBy highlighting beloved characters like Paddington Bear and Curious George, weโ€™re helping families connect joyful memories with reading and encouraging young readers to explore books in a fun and meaningful way.โ€

In addition to literacy-based activities, select events will feature face painters and balloon artists, giving children the chance to transform into their favorite storybook characters and further immerse themselves in the magic of classic tales.

All events are free and open to the public. Programs are designed primarily for children and families, though all ages are welcome to attend.

As part of the celebration, patrons who check out items during Classic Characters Month will be eligible for special rewards. Participants who meet their branchโ€™s checkout requirements will receive a classic character plush keychain and an opportunity to be entered into a drawing for a grand prize.

A healthy partnership: Preschool Services and Public Health provide essential health services to children in Head Start and Early Head Start

Mobile clinic brings health services to children enrolled in Preschool Servicesโ€™ programs.

The San Bernardino County Preschool Services Department and the San Bernardino County Public Health Department have partnered to provide comprehensive health screenings for children enrolled in Head Start and Early Head Start programs. The initiative deploys mobile health clinics directly to preschool sites to ensure students can complete required health assessments on time.

While Public Health provides preventive screenings, exams and health education to families, Preschool Services coordinates the planning and outreach to ensure resources reach the families who need them most. The mobile clinics offer hearing and vision screenings and full physical examinations to ensure children are healthy, able to see and hear clearly, and ready to succeed in school and beyond.

The partnership reduces the time parents must take off work to complete the screenings and minimizes the time children are away from the classroom by making clinical services available in neighborhoods and at school sites. The mobile clinics serve as efficient, one-stop locations where families can access high-quality care close to home. Completing the screenings helps families connect to services, supports healthy growth and development and gives children the best chance to thrive at home and in school.

Conducting these assessments during the critical early years of language and cognitive development also facilitates early detection of potential developmental or medical concerns. Early identification allows for timely intervention, preventing minor health issues from escalating into significant long-term challenges. Ultimately, this proactive approach to care leads to better long-term health outcomes, fewer missed school days and greater peace of mind for families.

Families with children in Head Start or Early Head Start are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to support their childโ€™s success. Parents or guardians of enrolled children must call 909-458-9447 to schedule a health screening appointment for their child.

Mobile health screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the dates and at the locations below.

  • Mill Center, 205 S. Allen St., San Bernardino: March 4 and April 1
  • Rialto Eucalyptus, 485 N. Eucalyptus Ave., Rialto: March 11 and April 8
  • Rialto Renaissance, 1360 W. Foothill Blvd., Rialto: March 18 and April 15
