San Bernardino County Public Defender delivers Mobile Defense services in Lucerne Valley

On April 8, the San Bernardino County Public Defender’s office brought its Mobile Defense Program to The River’s Edge Ranch in Lucerne Valley, delivering free legal assistance and access to essential county services for High Desert residents.

Community members met with Public Defender staff, resolved court matters through virtual court access, and received assistance with record clearing and outstanding fines. Participants were able to take meaningful steps toward resolving legal issues while also connecting with additional county services.

The event featured multiple San Bernardino County departments, several of which deployed mobile units to provide services directly on-site. Participating departments included Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Behavioral Health, Child Support Services, Human Resources, Transitional Assistance and Workforce Development.

By bringing mobile resources directly into the community, county partners expanded access to health screenings, behavioral health support, employment services, public benefits assistance and child support resources. Residents were able to address legal matters while connecting with vital services close to home, reducing the need for long-distance travel.

The River’s Edge Ranch is a nonprofit recovery facility in Lucerne Valley that supports men overcoming substance abuse through a holistic rehabilitation program focused on accountability, mentorship and long-term stability.

“At The River’s Edge Ranch, many of the men we serve carry significant legal burdens from their past,” said Brad Ladua, program director of The River’s Edge Ranch. “While they are doing the hard work of getting sober and rebuilding their lives, those unresolved issues can weigh heavily on their progress. Access to the Mobile Defense Unit gives them a real opportunity to move forward. Whether it is expunging records or resolving fines, these services remove barriers that would otherwise hold them back. The men here are committed to change, and opportunities like this are a crucial step toward long-term stability and success.”

The Mobile Defense Program continues to expand access to justice in San Bernardino County by bringing legal services and critical resources directly to the communities that need them most. The next Mobile Defense Program event will take place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the Chaffey College Chino Community Center. Community members are encouraged to register in advance to secure access to services.
