Last week, the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District proudly hosted the annual board of directors meeting for FIRESCOPE, a multi-agency policy organization within California’s Office of Emergency Services, at Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa.

The meeting is significant because it brings together fire chiefs and other officials from across California to establish standard policies for coordinated response to wildfires and other emergencies. County Fire’s seat at the table as host gives the agency a voice in shaping these policies.

FIRESCOPE was founded in 1972 following a devastating fire season. Today, the organization is responsible for establishing a common command structure, shared communications and policies used by agencies from different cities and counties when mutual aid is invoked during major incidents.

Beyond policy, relationships built at these meetings pay dividends in real moments of need.

County Fire Chief Dan Munsey recalled that during a crucial escalation of the autumn 2024 fires, “We were able to literally text regional fire chiefs asking for assistance, and we had 27 strike teams of engines on the way. It’s the relationships we made at these kinds of meetings which makes that possible.”

County Fire appreciates the hospitality of the resort and the Lake Arrowhead community and looks forward to returning in years to come.
