San Bernardino County is preparing for potential El Niño-related storms through year-round coordination, infrastructure maintenance and emergency preparedness efforts.

Heavy rain, flooding and debris flows can have significant impacts across San Bernardino County. To help reduce those risks, the county is preparing for potential El Niño-related storms through year-round coordination, infrastructure maintenance and emergency preparedness efforts.

The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services is working with county departments, the National Weather Service, cities and regional partners to monitor conditions, share critical information and coordinate emergency response. San Bernardino County Public Works crews are inspecting and maintaining drainage systems, flood control channels and roadways, with special attention to mountain communities and burn scar areas. Crews are also staging equipment throughout the county to respond quickly when storms cause flooding, rockfall or debris flows.

In addition to these preparedness efforts, Emergency Services has launched a dedicated El Niño and Storm Preparedness webpage to help residents prepare for potential impacts. The webpage includes resources on flooding, debris flows, sandbag availability, emergency alerts, evacuation planning and storm safety.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware by regularly checking their local National Weather Service office forecast, watches and warnings. Residents are also encouraged to sign up for the county’s Telephone Emergency Notification System (TENS) and download the Ready SB County app for emergency alerts and preparedness information.

Early evacuation planning is especially important for residents who may need additional time or assistance to leave safely, including individuals with disabilities or access and functional needs, as well as those with pets, large animals or livestock. Planning ahead and leaving early when an evacuation warning is issued rather than waiting for an evacuation order can help residents reach safety before conditions worsen or evacuation routes become impacted.
