The Arrowhead landmark, which can be seen for miles, is located in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, north of Wildwood Park. It is 1,375 feet in length, 449 feet in width and covers approximately 7.5 acres.
Many legends exist surrounding the Arrowhead landmark and its formation. The almost perfect outline appears to be man-made or artificial, but the phenomenon is considered natural. To help define the Arrowhead landmark, four rows of cistus were placed around it during the 1950s. Cistuses are believed to be fire resistant.
The landmark also holds cultural significance. Native Americans who inhabited the region noted the Arrowhead points to hot mineral springs, which they considered to be sacred ground. In 2016, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians illuminated the Arrowhead landmark in honor of the 14 lives that were lost during the Dec. 2, 2015, terrorist attack in San Bernardino.
The Arrowhead landmark has been designated California Historical Monument #977 and is the namesake for Lake Arrowhead and other entities. The historic arrowhead also inspired the seal and logo for San Bernardino County.
The information in this historical feature was originally part of a video series produced by the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk’s office.
