Public Health promotes “Nutrition as Prevention” during Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health participated in the national Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, observed October 19–25. The annual campaign aims to increase awareness about the dangers of lead exposure and promote actions that help protect children and families.

This year’s theme, “Nutrition as Prevention,” highlighted the important role healthy foods play in reducing lead absorption and encouraged families to provide nutritious meals and snacks whenever possible.

The department’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) participated in several outreach efforts throughout the week, including:

  • Sharing educational materials with more than 460 attendees at the Department of Child Support Services Trunk or Treat event.
  • Partnering with Riverside County CLPPP to present at San Bernardino Valley College, where staff distributed lead poisoning prevention resources to over 800 community members and partners.
  • Hosting a week-long social media campaign to promote awareness and prevention.

CLPPP also collaborated with the cities of Fontana, Redlands and Upland to issue proclamations recognizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and displayed public banners encouraging blood lead testing in Fontana and Ontario.

Lead poisoning can make it difficult for children to learn, pay attention and behave, and may cause long-term health problems—even when they don’t appear sick. The only way to know if a child has been exposed to lead is through a blood test.
