Veterans have several identification options to verify their military service for health care, retail discounts and more.

Veterans now have several options to verify their military service to fit their individual needs. Whether you’re interested in accessing Veterans Affairs (VA) health care, receiving a veteran discount at a local retailer, or simply looking for a convenient way to verify your service, identification options include a veteran designation on a California driver’s license or identification card, a digital veteran-status ID card through the VA app and more.

Veteran designation on a California driver’s license or identification card

Eligible veterans can add a veteran designation to their California driver’s license or identification card. This designation provides a convenient way to verify military service. To obtain this designation, veterans must visit a San Bernardino County Department of Veterans Affairs office to obtain the Status Verification Form (VSD-001) and present valid discharge documentation (DD-214). The completed VSD-001 form is then submitted in person by the veteran at a local California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) field office for processing. Depending on the veteranโ€™s situation, the DMV will charge a new, renewal or duplicate license fee for the designation.

Digital veteran-status ID card through the VA app
Veterans can access a digital veteran-status ID card through the VA Health and Benefits mobile app. The digital ID allows veterans to conveniently verify their identity at VA facilities, access eligible VA services and provide proof of military service for participating veteran discounts, all from their smartphone. In addition, the app allows veterans to refill and track VA prescriptions, send and receive secure messages with their VA health care team and review the status of VA disability claims and appeals.

Veteran ID Card (VIC)
The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a digital veteran ID card (VIC) to eligible veterans as proof of military service. It can be used to verify veteran status for discounts, community programs and other services.

Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
Veterans enrolled in VA health care can apply for a veteran health identification card (VHIC) in person at a VA medical center or online. This ID card is used primarily when accessing VA medical facilities and appointments.

Veterans seeking assistance with obtaining an ID card or learning more about any of these veteran identification options can visit va.sbcounty.gov or call 866-472-8387.
