County Museum hosts annual Shake or Treat Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness Fair

More than 900 people attended the San Bernardino County Museum’s annual Shake or Treat Earthquake and Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday, Oct. 19.

The free event featured a variety of tables and booths filled with disaster readiness information and freebies, an earthquake simulator, emergency vehicles and other safety tips from first responders and community groups.

“Earthquakes happen and the San Andreas Fault cuts right through San Bernardino County,” Museum Director David Myers said. “Our residents now have the tools and resources to protect themselves as the key to surviving an earthquake and reducing risk of injury lies in planning, preparing, and practicing what they will do if it happens.”

The San Bernardino County Office of Emergency Services (OES) brought their earthquake simulator machine, preparing residents for the intensity of a quake. They had the privilege of serving over 300 families.

“It’s intended to prepare people for the experience of an earthquake of that magnitude,” said OES Media Specialist Brianna Viteri. “It’s doesn’t feel exactly like an earthquake, but it’s as close as we can get without experiencing one in real life.”

Event-goers learned valuable tips from a multitude of departments and community organizations throughout the county, including OES, San Bernardino County Fire, Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, San Bernardino County Transitional Assistance, San Bernardino County Public Health, San Bernardino County Behavioral Health, San Bernardino County Airports, San Bernardino County Public Works/Special Districts, San Bernardino County Children and Family Services, the Devore Animal Shelter, Redlands CERT, Redlands Police Department, Inland SoCal United Way, and many more.

Guests enjoyed food and drinks from Coast 2 Coast Latin Cuisine, Mikey’s Fry House and Renegade Lemonade, dessert from Sweet Treat Kingdom, Funnel Kake Frenzy and Kona Ice of Redlands, and entertainment from X95.7 and OMG Face Painting.

The San Bernardino County Museum is located at 2024 Orange Tree Lane, at the California Street exit off Interstate 10 in Redlands. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. General admission is $10 (adult), $8 (military or senior), $7 (student), and $5 (child ages 6 to 12). Children five and under and museum members are admitted free. Parking is free and the museum is accessible to persons with disabilities.
