A mountainside pullout can be a great destination if you’re able to safely pull over and park your vehicle. It offers an opportunity to take in your surroundings, enjoy spectacular city views and capture rare celestial events.
We would like to thank Bruce Herwig of Yucaipa for submitting a stunning photo of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) soaring over the San Bernardino Valley from a mountainside pullout on Highway 18 in Crestline. Experts claim that Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is a once in a lifetime event, having last appeared 80,000 years ago. Fortunately, stargazers won’t have to wait too long for the next stargazing event.
The Taurid meteor shower will be visible in early November, with the Southern Taurids peaking on Nov. 4 and the Northern Taurids peaking on Nov. 11. Stargazers can expect to see five to 10 meteors per hour during the peak. We hope this inspires you to explore San Bernardino County for your next cosmic viewing event.
